About the role

Our Auckland and Wellington based teams are seeking interns to work with us over the 2024/2025 summer period.

We are looking for students with excellent quantitative and written skills, a passion for solving problems across a variety of industry sectors. Successful candidates will have experience working with data and will be familiar with R or Python, statistical techniques, optimisation techniques, numerical programming, machine learning methods and/or visualisation techniques.

There may be an opportunity for ongoing work after the internship for the right candidate.

Senior Software Engineer

Location: Wellington

  • Lead important client projects across a diverse range of industry sectors.
  • Solve business problems with software engineering and programming skills.
  • Collaborate with partners and clients across the globe.

We are looking for a senior software engineer who has at least 2 years of industry experience. The role is intended to increase the size of the software development team at Harmonic, to enable the team to undertake a greater amount of development work than otherwise possible; and, where appropriate, to bring into the Harmonic team contemporary ideas about practices for software engineering and development.

Your primary focus is to develop, deploy and maintain software tools. You will lead industry projects and work closely with our Lead Software Engineer to manage the deployment cycle of our software solutions. You will collaborate with other software engineers and data scientists at Harmonic to design and deliver fit for purpose solutions to our clients. Although requiring independent work at times, you are expected to take supervision from, and work closely with the senior leadership team at Harmonic.

This role requires a wide range of technical, customer-facing, teamwork, leadership and service delivery skills. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong communication and practical problem solving skills.

Only applicants that are legally entitled to work in New Zealand and can make themselves available for interviews in New Zealand will be considered for this position.

Key duties

  • Lead and deliver software solutions centred around data science, including defining requirements, solution design, and solution implementation.
  • Software development, testing, deployment and maintenance.
  • Convert data science models and prototypes into scalable and resilient production systems.
  • Continuous improvement of Harmonic software development and work practices.
  • Collaborate with people from different industries, backgrounds and expertise.

Skills and experience

  • Qualification in a relevant field such as Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or related discipline.
  • 2+ years experience in deploying software solutions (e.g. dashboards, models, automated processes) into production environments.
  • Knowledge of deployment pipelines and CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) practices.
  • Proficiency with containerisation technologies such as Docker and orchestration. Also the ability to design, implement, and manage containerised applications.
  • Proficiency in the Python programming languages.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with clients.
  • Excellent project discipline, particularly defining objectives, task planning, achieving milestones, problem identification, solution development and quality assessment.
  • A team player who thrives working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Flexibility to work at different domestic locations to meet work requirements.
  • Although not essential, strong candidates will also have familiarity with cloud platforms like Snowflake, AWS, or Azure.
